Memorial Day2008
Memorial Day trivia:
Did you know the birth of Memorial Day was in Waterloo, New York? (And coincidentally, we drove through there yesterday!)
To celebrate Memorial Day, we decided to stimulate the economy and spend some money at a flea market and some yard sales. LOL. We drove a couple of hours west to a little town named Avon that has a BIG flea market. We used to go there frequently before the gas prices started going out of control but haven't been in a few years and we found beaucoup booty! They musta been savin' it up for us. ;) Here's a picture, then a list of what's in the picture and a few close-ups for some of the small items:
Left to right:
- Two jazz CDs for the Snoopynut: $1.00 apiece
- A box of twelve new Peanuts glasses: $20.00
- Five new various cute flowery and smiley glasses: $1.25 (to replace the ones we currently have that are icky from the dishwasher)
- Heavy Garfield Christmas tote for MIL of the Snoopynut: $1.00
- Old cop helmet for a gag gift, (don't ask. LOL): $10.00
- Surprise item for someone who visits Snoopynut.com fairly regularly ;) $5.00
- Snow Peeps drinking cocoa and wrapped in a blanket to sit on our mantel with some other Snow Peeps: $5.00 (The lady actually dickered herself down. We asked how much, she said $10.00, then when we didn't say anything, she said, OK, $5.00. LOL.) $5.00
- String for some windchimes that were broken: 50¢
- Display case for the Snoopynut's Swedish dolls: $10.00 (Turns out it wasn't deep enough!)
- Black velvet Linus painting: $5.00

Omagoonus! Today is National Macaroon Day!
Anyone that knows the Snoopynut even the least little bit KNOWS what a cookie addict she is and I think macaroons fall into that category, don't they? Here's some info about the macaroon followed by some neat pictures I found on the internet:
National Macaroon Day honors the macaroon, a flourless cookie. It is popular among the Jewish community, especially during Passover, when Jews can not cook with flour. But, the popularity of the macaroon doesn't stop there. It is also enjoyed around the world.
Macaroon cookies (or "macaroon biscuits") often use egg whites (usually whipped to stiff peaks), chocolate or dates as the binder of a food fabric, such as ground or powdered nuts, coconut, cocoa, potato starch, corn starch, peanut butter, poppy seeds, toasted sesame seed paste, etc. Some recipes use wheat or other types of flour, but this is unusual and macaroons made with flour are arguably not true macaroons. Almost all recipes call for sugar, which caramelizes and provides body and a smooth, moist texture to the macaroon. If the coconut or other fabric used is very sweet, however, the sugar may be omitted. Macaroons were believed to have been first made in an Italian monastery in 1792.
If you stick around, the Snoopynut may post a picture of the ones she's going to make today. I mean seriously, did you think she could resist?
LATER ON IN THE DAY........
Umm....this is what happens when you don't use enough coconut....oops....
It's a big pile o' goo....(but a very tasty pile o' goo nevertheless)...Fortunately, I still had some coconut in the bag so I added it to the rest of the batch and they came out truly scrumptious! Yummy!
Want this recipe? If you click on the link above, it will open up a Word document you can print out in recipe form. If it doesn't work, email me and I will send it to you in text format. :)
We'd also like to send out well wishes for our friend and loyal visitor to Snoopynut.com, Opie. (He said he only visits monthly but that's more than most people. LOL!) Here's another Snoopy good luck charm for you, Ope!
